Antidepressant About as Effective as Estrogen for Menopausal Symptoms, Study Finds

In the first randomized trial comparing estrogen (estradiol 0.5 mg/day) and an antidepressant (venlafaxine 75 mg/day) for treating the hot flashes and night sweats common in menopause, both agents were found to be effective and well tolerated. "Low-dose oral estradiol and venlafaxine are effective treatments for [vasomotor symptoms] in women during midlife.
